Franklin’s Independent Financial Planners
About Dean Avenue Planning Group
We are an independent financial services firm, founded by Louis L. Kline and Kevin A. Auerr in 2007. Our co-founders have over 40 years of combined experience in financial services and accounting. We chose to be independent advisors to best suit the needs of our existing and future clients.
Our mission is to provide a better planning experience through seamless coordination and endless integration into our clients’ financial lives.
Our values are compassion, approachability, trust, humility, and understanding.
As an independent firm, we aren’t managed by corporate overseers or activist investors. We don’t have shareholders to appease, or sales quotas to meet. We are business owners and specialists, able to provide comprehensive financial recommendations that are in the best interests of our clients.
We have chosen to align with Cambridge Investment Research, Inc., an independent financial solutions firm, to support us in this effort. Through Cambridge, we can offer a wide variety of investment products and solutions to our clients. Click the button below to learn more about Cambridge.

Endless Coordination, Seamless Integration
When planning for the future, who do you turn to? The traditional approach is to find an investment manager for your portfolio, an accountant for your taxes, and an attorney for your wills, trusts, and estate plan. Each part is distinctly separate, with no overlap or collaboration.
That way of thinking is outdated.
With today’s modern complexities, the traditional approach doesn’t work. Your investments affect your taxes, your taxes affect your estate, and your estate affects your investments. So why don’t we plan that way?
You deserve a comprehensive, cohesive approach that coordinates your financial plan, tax strategy, and estate plan. That is why Dean Avenue Planning Group is here. We can help simplify your financial future. We’ll work closely with your accounting and legal professionals to create a cohesive strategy that can make your future something to look forward to.
Planning for Every Phase of Retirement
Our specialty is planning for retirement income. We help our clients answer two questions – how much they need each month for retirement, and how long their retirement assets will last. Our unique planning strategy is a phased approach, with each phase requiring a different investment allocation. Hover over the cards below to learn more.
Phase 1
Pre-RetirementWe help clients sustainably save for retirement, with a focus on long-term growth of assets. This phase can start at any age, but starting early can help the client take advantage of a longer time horizon and compounding growth. Diversification into various investment types helps us achieve growth while managing risk.
Phase 2
Early RetirementThis is an active phase of retirement – people often travel, focus on multiple hobbies, and give back to the community. We expect and plan for a larger amount of spending in this phase, and look for measured growth while mitigating investment risks that would put the client’s future spending plan in jeopardy.
Phase 3
Mid-RetirementAfter age 75, many clients choose to remain closer to home while still remaining active in their communities. Spending often “levels out” in this phase and more attention is given to funding healthcare and potential long-term care expenses. The investment allocation focuses on preservation and stable growth.
Phase 4
Late RetirementAt age 85+, the priority is maintaining a sustainable income stream that supports the client’s existing standard of living. We plan for additional healthcare expenditures, long-term care, and transitioning assets to the next generation. The investment allocation seeks to conserve the principal and includes measured growth to hedge against inflation.
Your Planning Experience
Our process is entirely different from what you’ve experienced before. We’ll thoroughly investigate your financial picture and show you the way to a successful retirement. Here’s how we do it.
No-Obligation Introductory Meeting
Let’s discuss why you’re here. This meeting is to get to know one another and sets the stage for what comes next.
Review Materials
We’ll review your assets, beneficiaries, current will, insurance (including long-term care), recent tax returns, and other items that relate to your financial situation.
Discovery
Ongoing discussion and analysis where we work together to determine:
-
- How much income you need in retirement
- How long your retirement income will need to last
- Your needs and wants for the future
- Healthcare needs in retirement
- Expected Social Security and defined benefit income (if applicable)
Plan Creation
We develop an initial plan for your future that focuses on providing a sustainable retirement income, and allocate assets for the different stages of your retirement. For more about how our investment philosophy, take a look at our Services section (link to Services).
Stress Testing and Refinement
After your initial plan is created, we stress test for multiple “what-if” scenarios, like large, unexpected expenses, market downturns, extreme inflation, long-term recessions, and more. Based on our testing, we refine your plan to mitigate as much risk as possible.
Review and Education
We present you with a finalized plan and provide education on the strategies and factors it contains. We want our clients to understand their plan and the “why” behind every investment decision.
Ongoing Refinement and Collaboration
After you approve the plan, we’ll put it into action. We provide regular updates on your plan progress and readily collaborate with other professionals (i.e. CPA or attorney) to coordinate financial decisions.
Coordinating Your Plan
Your financial plan is meant to work alongside your existing tax and estate planning strategies. We are happy to collaborate with your existing professionals and, with your permission, will proactively work with them to ensure no part of your financial plan is overlooked.
We have established a long-term, strategic relationship with Auerr, Zajac, & Associates, LLP, a public accounting firm. For nearly 20 years, we have partnered with one another to provide comprehensive, holistic solutions to our mutual clients. To learn more about their firm, click the link below.
